NCWT

North Coast Woodturners was founded in 1986 and  proudly serves woodturners in Northeastern Ohio.

Welcome to NCWT

North Coast Woodturners is a woodturning club serving northeast Ohio. We meet the 1st Saturday of every month and occasionally will meet on Sunday when we have special guest turners.

Our mission is to provide education, information, and organization to people in this area interested in the art and craft of woodturning.

Meetings are open to the public and anyone may attend. When we have professional turner demos there is a small fee for non-members payable at the start of the meeting to help offset the cost of the professional turner.

Applications for membership are always encouraged.

Alan Lacer's Sunday Class in May
   by Ron Sieloff
Alan will be presenting a  hands-on workshop to focus on the joy and problems of hollowing end-grain.  The class will start by focusing on the unique character of hollowing out end-grain  (safely, efficiently and cleanly)  and compare this to hollowing face-grain projects (most bowls, plates, platters, etc.).   The class  will first look at a number of solutions and strategies for working such grain--and point out the types of projects where the turner encounters this issue:  goblets, end-grain bowls and vessels, end-grain boxes, cups, turned vases (hollowed not drilled), scoops, egg cups, etc.     Following discussion and demonstrations  each participant will execute an end-grain bowl.  From there Alan will take participants step-by-step in the process of creating an end-grain hollowed turned lidded box.   Participants should bring standard between center tools  (the outside of such work is the same as between center grain) such as a roughing gouge, parting tool, skew chisel and a detail/spindle gouge.    For the inside hollowing Alan suggests you bring a 1/2 to 3/4" side radius or round scraper, and end-grain hollowing tools (ring or hook type tools)  you already possess and would like to understand their usage.  Check with Alan at the demo prior to  this class about specific tool questions.

Materials per student:    1 piece of green material 4" in diameter and 5" in length  (several extra pieces and one for me).   Any wood will be okay, and probably best if it does not include the pith.   For the boxes:  1 piece of a dry hardwood approximately 3" x 3 "   and 6" in length  (again, several extra pieces and one for me).  For the box pick something not horribly hard though, such as soft maple, walnut, cherry, ash or poplar.   PLEASE NOTE WOOD FOR THE CLASS IS INCLUDED IN THE CLASS FEE. HOWEVER IF YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR PIECE OF WOOD YOU WANT TO USE, YOU MAY DO SO. JUST LET DENNY KNOW SO WE DON'T PURCHASE WOOD FOR YOU IF YOU INTEND TO BRING YOUR OWN.
